Becoming Unmapped
An invitation to visual artists and writers to explore the way dementia alters memory, time, space, and self.
About the Project
Dementia alters space, time, and our sense of self, making the familiar unfamiliar. What was once mapped, routines, relationships, language, identity, is gradually unmade. Yet within this unravelling, there are moments: of beauty, humour, resistance, and quiet connection.
Becoming Unmapped is a multidisciplinary creative project inviting artists and writers to explore and redraw the maps. We are not looking for answers, only honest, considered responses to what it means when the world no longer holds its shape.
What we’re looking for:
Work that reflects the shifting terrain of memory, perception, and presence.
Responses that are fragmentary, abstract, narrative, or emotive.
Art rooted in lived experience, empathy, or imagination.
Submissions that honour complexity and open space for tenderness, discomfort, and truth.
Selected works will form part of a public exhibition (online and physical), with further manifestations to follow.
Gareth Reed - Photographer
These images use the unravelling of physical objects as a metaphor for the disintegration of self caused by dementia: evoking fragility, coherence lost, and the memory of what was once whole.
David Braziel - Poet
An interactive poem that explores dementia, memory and the loss of self through progressive visual and semantic distortion. Evoking cognitive disarray and a gradually fragmenting space.
Submit Your Work
We want to see how you, as a fellow artist, respond to the themes of dementia, memory, time, space, and self. Submit your work using the button on the left. If your submission is selected, we will feature it on the Becoming Unmapped website. If the project later develops into a physical exhibition or publication, we may invite selected contributors to discuss that separately.
If the project generates any profit, we will share it fairly with contributing artists and/or donate it to reputable dementia charities.
